changing latitudes

Camped alongside Lake Michigan on the Upper Peninsula

Greetings in the spirit of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the only message of any real eternal value:

I am penning this newsletter at the public library in the quaint seaside town of St. Ignace on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  After some thought wrestling and prayer last night, the dawn brought confirmation that it was time to move on.  So, we drove the 250 miles to the Mackinac Bridge, crossing over from the Mitten to the U.P.

With this drive, the bike route simply changed latitudes; the east-west direction was not compromised.  In fact, I am actually about 60 miles farther east than I was when I crossed the state line down near Niles.  Anyway, the weather up here is absolutely gorgeous.  The agate waters of Lake Michigan are intoxicating, and we look forward to a wonderful sunset a little bit later.  Right now, we are camped at a small United States Forest Service Campground just a few miles up US Hwy. 2.  The beach is just through the woods, and the rustling of the aspen trees will make for a good bedtime lullaby.

Tonight’s bath was in the cold waters of Lake Michigan.

Tomorrow morning, I plan on pedaling about 75 or so miles along Lake Michigan.  Then, the route will head north and west along Lake Superior into northern Wisconsin.  Please pray that the weather remains pleasant.  The reports are calling for showers and thunderstorms over the next couple of days.  This could make things miserable.

I want everyone to start praying for a situation that I will be throwing myself into next week sometime.  I met a young man on my sister's Life Action revival team who has a couple of lost family members that live in Marquette, Michigan (on the shore of Lake Superior).  The bicycle route will actually be going through this town.  He gave me their addresses and requested that I knock on their doors so as to confront them with the Gospel.  He said that he could not tell me what to except but would really appreciate it if I would give it a try.  I was told that these folks have heard the Gospel time and time again, and they remain cold to it.  To be honest, I am a little leery about actually going through with this, but I did give the young man my word.  Thus, the issue is settled.  Please pray that the Lord will give me the right words to say, a right introduction, a convicting presentation of the Gospel, etc.  Who knows?  Maybe these folks will open up their homes to us.  The names are out in the truck, so I will pass them on with the next post.  It is two different families—pray that I can find them.

Well, this will be a short update.  Only the Lord knows when or where we can find another library.  By God's grace, we have been able to give out a couple of Gospel tracts this day.  May the Word change such lives.  Before I leave this library, I want to confront this teenage girl with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  I overheard her talking about death, so a bridge has already been constructed.  Here goes . . .

Until next time, we are most affectionately yours in the service of our King, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords,
