twenty fathoms

Yesterday was dreary and a bit lonely here in Montana. I lumbered from the Team Yeshua mission house over to an empty meeting hall in accordance with Eastern Time and set up my iPad and little Starlink satellite. You see, exactly 20 years ago yesterday was a Wednesday night. There was a small gathering that night in Catawba County, and one of the individuals involved had just dropped me, Jamie, and little Bethany off at the airport. We flew to Ladakh for the very first time and didn’t return home for more than a year.

workings of providence

The divine workings of Providence, its diligent Hand, are such that seemingly insignificant decisions we make for one purpose are often the means whereby another far greater purpose is accomplished, hardly related to the matter that first foisted a fork into our road. Hence, the Scriptures ask a poignant rhetorical question, the answer being obvious: “Who hath despised the day of small things” (Zechariah 4:10)?

twenty years of local church testimony

It is such a blessing to be back home and to be with the brethren this morning as we celebrate 20 years of local church ministry here in Catawba County, North Carolina. On September 6, 2006, a Wednesday, Jamie, Bethany (2 years old at the time, and I flew to India and Ladakh for the very first time, long before Team Yeshua was even a passing thought. We would not return home to the States for many months. Interestingly, that same evening, a gathering of believers that became New Testament Christian Fellowship met for the very first time in a home off Springs Road in Hickory.

ol' man river and ol' mama lake

The Jews are lost and in need of their Messiah. The Gentiles are lost and in need of the Gospel. The Church is floundering and in need of genuine revival. So, we row WITH and NOT AGAINST the tides of ministry, and we take what the LORD in his sovereign Providence chooses to give to us, even it is a long walk up OL’ MAN RIVER or a quick jaunt down to OL’ MAMA LAKE. If you, dear brethren, will endeavor to do the same, you will find peace amidst the chaos. And soon, our Bridegroom will come for us in the clouds!

There it is, the Murphy 563 sign to the Manteo 563 sign via an unbroken walking route more than double the 563 miles! And not even a hostile encounter and it’s empty threats, a real jerk who responded to kindness with vitriol (a form of what the Bible calls “without natural affection” in the last days—2 Timothy 3:3), were going to stop us. I was born in the Old North State. I have lived in the Old North State State most of my life. Now, I can say with my children: “We’ve HOOFED it, preaching Christ all along the way!”

If you familiarize yourself with the geography in Acts 16:6-10, you’ll see that Paul wandered about over a lot of miles in Asia Minor, waiting for direction from the LORD. He tried to go places but was “forbidden of the Holy Ghost” (16:6) and “the Spirit suffered them not” (16:7) He finally ended up in Troas where Luke joined up with him (note the change from “they” in verse 8 to “us” in verse 10) and where he got the notable Macedonian Call. His plans were changed multiple times, but it all redounded to the glory of God and an incredible work of the Great Commission.

hanukkah is in the bible

Today, December 14th at sundown, is the start of the Jewish feast of Hanukkah. Over the years, I have used the occasion to send out personal messages in the name of Yeshua HaMessiach to some of the Israeli backpackers we had previously met in South Asia and South America, pointing them to the Truth of the Scriptures trusting the LORD to use my words somehow in their lives back in Israel.

lost sheep?

lost sheep?

Why do I use the moniker “lost sheep of the House of Israel” when referring to Israelis or Jewish folks in need of Messiah? Simple, the Messiah used that moniker. That’s how our Lord described His people after the flesh (Matthew 10:6).  And though that flock remains full of lost sheep, it is still a HOUSE which He has promised to restore.

finish what you started

finish what you started

There’s an old song by The Imperials entitled, “Finish What You’ve Started.” It goes a little something like this: Finish what You’ve started in me. I like what I see. Finish what You’ve started in me Lord. Well, I love, I love what You’re doing in me … Finish what You’ve started. I know You will in me Lord Indeed, it’s a great promise from the Lord. For, “he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ” (Philippians 1:6). IF THE LORD ALWAYS FINISHES THE WORK HE BEGINS IN US, SHOULD WE NOT ALWAYS FINISH THE WORK WE BEGIN FOR HIM?

I’d appreciate your prayers as I come out of a bout of pneumonia while trying to finish up a cross-walking spur begun by Team Yeshua this summer from downtown Missoula and aiming to connect up with #TheLongWalkUSA main route as it passed through Seeley Lake. By God’s grace, and despite feeling pretty lousy, I finally finished walking every mile of highway asphalt in Madison County.

all about testimony

We were genuinely sad to leave Surendar and the Bread Omelette Man standing in the rain as we evacuated Saturday night in those 4WD jeeps, but not before we gave each of them a Bible. We will never forget the Sundazed Cottage on Hadimba Temple road in Manali. It was a true refuge amidst the monsoon fury of HImachal Pradesh. And to God alone be the glory, for this testimony of American Christians who made an impression on a few folks in Manali.

Here are a few journal entries from the day Team Yeshua decided to seize an opportunity to flee Manali by night and make the long overland journey back to Leh. The road to Delhi was closed, the conditions in Manali were rapidly deteriorating, and we had already missed our flights back to the United States.

farewell

It’s bittersweet to leave Ladakh after such a fruitful time and to bid farewell to our dear brethren here. So much material has gone out, more so than with any prior Team Yeshua. I simply cannot believe it’s almost over. By God’s grace, we have had 156 encounters with lost sheep from the House of Israel, far exceeding all previous Team Yeshua summers. We have witnessed to Gentiles from 26 foreign countries. 17 English Bibles have gone out.  And, the Lord was gracious to us in His own special way.

What a blessing to break in the new cross! We logged 12 walking miles, claiming three high motroable passes—the Taglung La (17,482 ft.), the remote Yar La (16,240 ft.), and the Polongko La (16,305 ft.) We also walked the cross through a nomad camp, from the high point at their mani stone shrine down to the main highway.

Nearly 20 years ago, I met two young Muslim men from Kashmir on the streets of Leh as Jamie and I were pushing Bethany in a stroller up the steep hill of Fort Road. I built a bit of a relationship with them over the ensuing weeks before they had to suddenly depart the area because of a death in the family. On October 11, 2006, I penned these words in my journal:

israeli encounters in leh

Yesterday, we had 13 encounters with Israeli backpackers here in Leh. Today, we enjoyed another 7 encounters. Carter preached to a group of six or seven outside the Airtel Office (where everyone goes to get a cellular SIM card that works in Ladakh). He took them through the Law and the Prophets and declared Christ. All took Hebrew Gospel tracts. At the new Japanese coffee shop in town, it seems Israelis are always there. Josiah preached to a group of four young men on leave from the IDF, and the girls shared with two young ladies. A lot of Hebrew tracts have gone out.

Team Yeshua made it to Keylong today for a night of acclimatization at 10,000 ft. We got here from Manali several hours faster than with our last volunteer team that came here in 2016. And 2016 was much faster than 2014 when my family and I got stuck for six hours because of a washed-out bridge. The kids were little and tracted everyone stuck there with us. I remember it vividly.

This morning, we finished up a teaching on the general revelation of God that all men in every place have heard. All men have heard from the Lord: CREATION declares there is a Creator. The CURSE of sin declares there to be a problem between the Creator and His creation. And the CONSCIENCE shouts said problem to be personal: There is a problem between the Creator and you. The solution to this grave dilemma is by special revelation, the Word of God. Many have never heard the answer to the problem. That’s why we gotta go tell ‘em.

Two to three days in Delhi is usually about all I can take. As recently as two weeks ago, the heat and the apocalyptic yellow haze would have been so much worse. But, praise the Lord, the monsoon has begun! Temps are in the 80s with some rain here and there. Unfortunately, a lot of rain in the mountains we have to cross means mudslides and washed-out roads. Our overland path crossing the Himalaya, at this point, is uncertain. Prayers appreciated. We head out early tomorrow morning in a 12-seater Tempo, bound for Manali at about 6500 ft in elevation. It’s a 12-hour drive that must start early to avoid Delhi traffic.
